This is a point I notice myself making to people around me multiple times, so I might as well make it public. There are far more lonely people in Bangalore (and probably also in Delhi, in 20-30 age group middle / upper-middle class) than there are people to organise high quality events for them. Many of the meetups on meetup.com or similar are not very good, you tend to enter them as strangers and then again leave as strangers. Some meetups are good and conducive to making new friendships / relationships.
If you want more meetups or events, one option you can always consider is to just organise the event yourself.
"Okay, if you're telling us to organise events, then why aren't you (Samuel) organising events?"
Maybe I will, in future! Maybe I am making excuses and I just need to Do the Thing.
My current answer for why I am not organising events:
I tend to be sometimes resentful of people (for doing nothing while the world ends), which makes it harder.
My brand is high risk.
I am very public about wanting to attack the people building ASI. This makes me a target, and people around me also at higher risk. This makes less people want to associate with me atleast in a very public way, more people are willing to associate with me in private than in public (and I respect this boundary of theirs).
All-in-all it makes me not the ideal person to be the public face for low-stakes events like board games or movie night or art class or some shit.
I don't enjoy most events that much. If I organise an event, I would prefer it to be an event I enjoy too, not just one that the attendees enjoy. At this point the primary events I actually like are either:
Events with serious conversations, either fixing a problem I care about, or fixing a problem you care about, where the stakes are not small and people actually care about the problem being solved. I generally prefer 1-to-1 conversations over group conversations for this sort of stuff, it makes everything easier. (Note to self - Why?)
Events with good gender ratio. I don't know that many single women who I can just invite to an event whenever I feel like. I know many couples from different social circles, maybe I can invite them all into some shared event. I don't know, something about this idea just sounds boring and lame to me, but maybe there's a way to make it work. Will consider. (I am definitely not interested in organising parties where alcohol is the primary lowest common denominator thing.)
