Many of the experiences I like seem to involve intense physical sensation
Disclaimer
personal
target audience - strictly myself
Main
Lightbulb moment lmao
Examples of such experiences:
Swimming. Sometimes cold water swim / plunge
Sauna
Very spicy food (to the point where I tear up)
Massage
Sex
Stores with very bright lighting. (I used to enjoy this, now bored of it.)
Loud music? (Does loud music count? Like, not to the point where it is painful for the eardrums, but loud enough that you can't run a parallel thought stream so easily. And I prefer listening at home, not in a concert because I dislike crowds and sweat and expensive tickets.)
Day-long hikes maybe
Sleep deprivation. (Sometimes)
Having my train be derailed lmfao
(I will skip some substance-related stuff since I don't want to remind myself of that, and I wanna stay sober. But technically that also counts here, yes.)
For all of these, if I overdo them I get bored of them. Need a sufficiently large reset period before the experience can be pleasurable again.
Counterexamples (experiences I don't enjoy, despite intense physical sensation):
Rollercoasters
Driving (bike, car, etc)
Strong smells of any kind (pleasant or unpleasant)
Pain. Like, actually being injured
Very hot or very cold weather. (I actually don't mind visiting a place with large temperature difference for a day or two. I just don't want to live there.)
Most sports
Possible explanation (not tested)
By default, my senses are switched off and I am not processing any of that information. However if the experience is sufficiently intense then I can no longer ignore it.
Implications if true
I should maybe try more such experiences? For example, I could try a martial art and get punched in the face lol.
Is there a way to electric shock yourself within a safe level? I could check
