Why I grudging respect people like Adolf Hitler and the Unabomber
they took unpopular moral philosophies seriously
they were among the first to do so - the closer you are to being the literal first person to take something unpopular seriously - rather than just an early adopter - the harder this is going to be on your psychology
they took it seriously enough to restructure their entire lives around this
they pursued rational plans till completion in pursuit of this, instead of painfully flailing around, example: actually taking the idea of living in woods seriously, actually starting a political party, actually getting yourself published in national newspaper
Their actions were congruent with their words.
till they died they never wavered and genuinely derived meaning in life from the values they held and the plans they persued. They never regretted their choices.
