Nolan could have just made a biography of the actual magician himself. Reality is so insane you don't need to invent a script with plot holes (biggest plot issue for me was the transportation device that used literal magic).
In the movie, I guess Angier leans towards using violence (and technology) whereas Borden leans towards using deception. Although to be clear, both of them do use both violence and deception. This makes me closer to Angier than Borden.
In real life, Ling Soo also hid his identity, pretended to marry someone for a magic trick, cheated on his wife and ultimately died due to a magic trick gone wrong.
