Just reorganised the file structure of my website, based on my learnings over all of 2025.
What?
In general, I have made the folder structure a lot more flat instead of hierarchial. Many posts have now just been moved to "my_research" folder, whether or not they are actually research. Many other folders have been deleted.
As of 2026-01-18, the only top-level folders are "connect_with_me", "my_research", "website_meta" and "personal"
I have broken a bunch of links as a result of this. Hopefully you can still google and find the new links though.
Why?
Keeping separate folders called "Important" or "Unimportant" didn't work for me. Hence I merged them both.
Your sense of what is important for you or important to signal-boost to others, changes with time.
You might change your opinions on various topics.
Your posts might start out as low-quality posts intended for your own learning, but later transform into posts that are targeted well at some audience and can hence go viral. It is better to store posts in a single folder (and hence URL path), but maintain an index or about page that helps people navigate to what you think is important at any given moment.
Keeping separate folders for "projects" and "research" was not the best idea for me. Hence I merged them both.
Research informs projects. Projects inform research. Marking a boundary between the two is doable, but where exactly to mark it can be ambiguous.
Keeping separate folders for "work" and "personal" seems fine so far.
Work-life separation is a well understood concept across most careers, socioeconomic classes, countries, etc - even if different cultures implement the details of this differently.
Keeping a folder called "connect_with_me" seems fine so far. One of the top reasons people search for your website will always be to connect with you 1-to-1. You will almost always want some channel by which people you don't know can request 1-to-1 meetings with you. (And even if you don't want meetings at all, it can be helpful to explain why.)
Keeping separate folders for "advice" and "research" didn't work for me. Hence I merged them both.
What constitutes good advice is often informed by research. I started out giving very generic ass advice to people. But now it is a lot more targeted and informed by my views of ASI risk, for example. Some people still need generic advice like how to get a job or start a blog or so on, but I no longer focus on giving this type of advice.
Keeping separate folders called "courses" and "my_statements" might be fine, I'm not sure. I merged them anyway.
These folders were very small after whole of 2025. I don't make courses full time. I am not currently influential enough for people to care about my statements on anything, unless my statements are backed by good research or persuasive rhetoric or similar. Hence I just merged these folders.
