Note: This is a quick post. Not much time spent on it.
Forms of Leverage
-
Attention
- If many people look at what you say, you can guide thoughts.
-
Capital (Money)
- If you have lots of funds, you can invest and grow power.
-
Internet-Copyable Products
- Things like code, blog posts, and videos can spread fast on the web.
You can also mix these forms. For example:
- Zuckerberg has code (Facebook) plus cash from it.
- Vitalik has code (Ethereum) plus cash, and now more eyes on him since crypto is big.
- Highest level might be to build new ways of rule on the web. That may beat old ways.
Real Power vs Formal Power
- A big job title does not mean people truly care about your words.
- A rich person might have few fans, while a YouTuber can have many.
- The internet lets you reach lots of people. You can see their comments and ideas in real time, which was hard in old days (like mail by train).
Self-Replication
- You may want your leverage to live on after you die.
- Groups (like firms or govs) can hold your plan and push it long after you’re gone.
- Some ideas, like democracy or free trade, have spread for centuries. Faiths spread too.
- An idea or belief can drive folks to build more support over time.
My Personal Leverage Goals
- Build a new form of government with code. No need for a formal top job.
- Advise someone who has lots of funds or fame.
- Not big on giving life tips or career talks to huge crowds. I’d rather make tools that let others do that.
- Not keen on chasing huge funds or fame myself—takes too much time and may limit my freedom.
- Not trying to start a new faith or big belief system. That needs deep wisdom and long years of work.
