Death of Big Tech
Why big tech exists
- Code is big. Good devs cost a lot.
- Gear and power cost a lot. This includes wires, towers, and chips.
Gear costs drop fast
- Each decade, gear gets cheap.
- In 10 to 20 years, home PCs may run big apps.
- But video apps, big LLM use, or future 3D apps may still cost more.
LLM makes search easy
- Big tech links people and data.
- Uber links drivers and riders, LinkedIn links staff and boss, etc.
- Soon, small servers with LLM can do the same.
What next?
- In 10 to 20 years, we might host our own apps.
- Big tech may stay, but it will change form.
- We have a decade or two to build a better choice.
Credit to Moxie Marlinspike and others for pointing out code complexity as the key.
